It’s Halloween Month!

Me on my way to work this month

Yes, it’s not Halloween yet, but it’s Halloween Month. Yes, I know Halloween Month is not a thing yet, but I’m hoping to make it a “thing“.  I love Halloween because of the costumes, the decorating and the candy of course.

I am not a fan of slasher horror films. I’m over them. Like everyone else, when I was a teenager/early twenties, I’d enjoy a good slasher movie with creative ways to kill people, but somewhere along the way, maybe when my kids were born and we watched Harry Potter and Disney movies every day for fifteen years, I lost my liking of murder movies.

One thing I do have to say is that Disney movies are not all that wholesome. First of all, almost every one of them start with a parent or both parents dying. That’s as bad as a slasher movie; and maybe worse because they show kids abandoned as toddlers.

What I love about Halloween is the decorating and the costumes. I love someone who goes all-out, over the top with decorating their house and yard.  I also love the people who recognize Halloween before October. There’s one house in my neighborhood that puts up Halloween decorations in August. I feel the same way about Christmas too. Too much, too early and over the top is what I love.

Not my house, but I wish it was.

I know that Halloween is not for everyone, and it’s not like it used to be. In my childhood I was lucky enough to grow up in a great neighborhood filled with kids. Every Halloween the street would be filled with kids “Trick or Treat”ing from the moment the sun set until about 9:00 pm. We would spend weeks creating our costumes. Almost no one had a store bought costume. Now, streets full of costumed kids have been replaced with Halloween trick or treating at a shopping mall or supermarket. As a kid, getting home with that bag full of candy and pouring it out on your bedroom floor to gaze at the incredible smorgasbord of delicious treats was the best feeling in the world to an 8 year old. Then of course you’d barter and trade treats with your siblings. Why can’t we do that as adults?

I’d love to hear your thoughts on Halloween in the comments. Do you like it? Do you hate it? Don’t care either way? And why do you like it or not?

Thanks for reading! Have a great Fall day! ~Phil

  1. I’m all for Halloween Month. 🙂 Hugs.

  2. I like Halloween since our community goes all out. This makes for at least four good posts about the celebrations. You are right. Kids don’t trick or treat anymore. I’m not even sure we have kids in the neighborhood. The only ones I have seen belong to mama deer.

  3. I loved reading this! Hallowe’en is the most important day of my year, and I do a countdown on social media from 1st to 31st with a different picture every day. I’ve always loved ghosts and, as a kid, the thought of a whole day dedicated to my favourite thing was incredible. I’ve since discovered Samhain and the wheel of the year, so there’s a bit of spookiness all year round but it all culminates on 31st October.

    • You’re like me. I’d be happy to celebrate Halloween about three times a year. I love that there are other holidays out there like Samhain, Walpurgis Night and Beltane.
