Happy Diwalloween?

Pic from Wedding Day Sparklers

Yes, it’s Diwali and Halloween on the same day! Two of my favorite holidays are the same day this year. How can this not be an international world-wide holiday? Diwali is on different dates each year, so these two holidays only collide every so often.

If you’re not familiar with the Hindu holiday of Diwali, you could read this, or I could tell you that Diwali is the Festival of Lights. It’s a celebration of light over darkness, or good over evil.

How great is it that the holiday of goodness crashes right into the holiday of evil and scariness this year?

The picture above comes from another blog, Aarika’s Closet, where she has a nice article on creative ways to blend the two holidays for children. Also, if you want to enjoy a funny song about Diwali you can watch this by Steve Carell, playing Michael Scott in The Office. Kudos to actress Mindy Kaling, character Kelly Kapoor, who wrote the song. If you click on her name you can read her blog.

With Halloween and Diwali occurring together this year I’m imagining trick or treating  kids dueling in the streets for candy. I think half the kids should dress as heroes of some kind and the other half can dress as popular villains or monsters, and they have to put on a performance at each house in order to earn their treats. Ok, maybe not every house, just at my house. I’m giving out full-size candy bars and they’re not cheap. I want a little more bang for my buck. That’s not too much to ask is it? I guess I’d better get that memo out to the neighbors.

I hope you have a fun Diwalloween! (trademark pending). Thanks for reading. ~Phil
