The Top Ten Most Painful Things I’ve Ever Experienced

Keeping in mind that pain and experiences are very subjective, here are the ten most painful things I’ve ever experienced.

10. Stubbing only my pinky toe: This is the worst isn’t it? Especially because it’s never expected. I’ve done this several times because there is absolutely no way to prevent it from happening unless I wear steel-toed boots all the time.

9. Tore a tricep muscle in a scooter accident: You know those little razor scooters that used to be popular among kids? About 15 years ago, when I was still a full-grown adult, my young son was playing over at a friends house and didn’t own a cell phone yet, so I hopped on his razor scooter to zip over there and tell him it was time for dinner. I had a downhill driveway and those little scooter wheels have absolutely no traction. Needless to say, when I tried to make the turn at the bottom of the driveway the scooter and I went our separate ways and I hit the ground with my left arm extended to soften my fall. That did not end well.

That’s not my foot, but it looks a lot like mine did. One star. Would not recommend.

8. Big toe possibly broken by a speeding baseball: My middle son was a very good high school baseball player. During a pitching workout I played catcher for him. I wore all the catchers gear because he could throw the ball around 80 mph (125 kph). One place the gear doesn’t cover is the end of your feet. Often pitches move left or right towards the end of their flight. Towards the end of one particular balls flight it dropped low and away from the center of the plate and I missed the catch. It struck me right on my big toe. Well, not right on the big toe. I was wearing sneakers. It still felt like my toe exploded.

7. Getting a novacaine injection right into the roof of my mouth: I was having one of several oral surgeries I’ve had in my life. The needle into the roof of my mouth hurt enough that I reflexively grabbed the armrests to prevent me from shooting out of the chair.  To add insult to injury the oral surgeon said “Oops” as blood spurted out onto his hand. It was my blood, not his. If I have a top ten list of times you don’t want to hear oops, when a needle is in your mouth is definitely one of them.

6. Paper cut: The pain doesn’t last long, but for a fraction of a second you think you’re going to bleed to death.

5. A combination of bone spurs, a torn labrum and an impingement: These three things were all occurring in my right shoulder at the same time. The labrum is a cuff of cartilage-like stuff that goes around the ball and socket joint helping to hold it in place. One day, the day I decided to finally have surgery, I was walking down a hallway at work and suddenly something happened in my shoulder, possibly the torn labrum got pinched in the joint. The pain literally staggered me. The picture above is exactly what they did to me. They went into the shoulder from three different places.

This is not me

4. Guy fell on my head: I was playing basketball and I dove for a loose ball. Another player fell right on my head, driving my face into the floor. I needed stitches above my right eye and broke a tooth.

3. In bare feet at night and stepping on a Lego you didn’t see: Here’s my advice: If you’re not a parent yet, you can avoid the whole thing by just keeping the status quo. Do not ever buy your children Legos. Even if you’re vigilant about them picking them up, one time they’ll miss one and you’ll step on it in bare feet and you will fall to the floor in excruciating pain.

2. Child birth: Look, you women can whine all you want about pushing a watermelon out of a garden hose, but you get to lay down and take pain meds. When my wife gave birth I had to stand next to the bed for hours. My feet and back were exhausted and sore. I’m kidding. I put this in to see how many of you read this far and want to yell at me now.

1. Inadequate local anesthesia for a cut into my spine: For many years I had a small, cyst under the skin right over my lower spine. The doctor said it was just some skin cells that clogged the pore. For a decade that cyst sat there doing nothing. Then one day it blew up to the size of a golf ball, on my back. A painful, burning golf ball. I went to a general surgeon who put some local anesthesia around the cyst. Then cut it open and started cleaning the infection out. It felt like someone took a scalding hot, razor sharp knife and was directly poking at unprotected nerves. It was the kind of pain that made me grip the corners of the exam table and grit my teeth.

So that’s my story of pain. What’s yours? In the comments put what the most painful thing is that you’ve ever experienced.

I hope you have a painless Wednesday! Thanks for reading! ~Phil

Do Short People Really Got No Reason To Live?

In 1977 singer/songwriter Randy Newman kind of shocked the world with his song Short People which began with this lyric:

Short people got no reason,
Short people got no reason,
Short people got no reason,
To live

I’m not short, but I’m also not tall. I’m 5’8″. Ok, to be 100% truthful, I now measure 5’7 1/2″ or 171.5 cm. I used to be 5’8 1/2″ tall. I was 15 years old and had grown 8 inches in the previous three years. I was thinking “At this rate I’ll be 6 feet tall by the time I’m 18!” Apparently after my three year growth spurt, my body decided to put all it’s growth into my brain, I hope.

As Ryan Reynold‘s said in 1998 in the hilarious series, Two Guys, a Girl and a Pizza Place, “Come, sit, admire my big brain!” If you watched that show, please give me a shout out in the comments. I loved that show. It was before anyone knew Ryan Reynolds.

Despite the size of my noggin, I’m still self conscious about my height. In the United States the average male is 5’10” or 178 cm. So, I’m a little on the short side. To be honest, I don’t love it.

In the country of East Timor, however, the average male height is 5’2 1/2″!!! I’d be a giant there! I’m thinking of moving there, where I could be the most successful professional wrestler in all of East Timor! If you’re wondering where East Timor is, (also called Timor-Leste) it’s an island nation about halfway between Australia’s north coast and Indonesia.

They got little hands,
And little eyes,
And they walk around,
Tellin’ great big lies,
They got little noses,
And tiny little teeth,
They wear platform shoes,
On their nasty little feet,
Well, I don’t want no short people,
Don’t want no short people,
Don’t want no short people,
‘Round here

Man, that Randy Newman was a jerk. That kind of slander against short people would not be received well in 2024, would it?

Anywho, the reason that I got on this short people rant is because of clothing. In most shirts, I’m a medium. But if I buy a standard medium sized shirt, often it’s too long to wear casually untucked because they make them for 5’10” people. Thanks to the internet, I have located two stores,  Untuckit and Ash & Erie, that have websites and they make clothes that fit shorter guys perfectly, but… they charge $70-80 per shirt! What the hell? I call that discrimination. If I’m getting a shirt that’s smaller than another shirt, shouldn’t my shirt cost less because they used less material and probably one less button?  Ash & Erie and Untuckit, get your shirt together! Us slightly shorter guys have enough cultural bias to deal with. We don’t need to get ripped off on our clothing budget too. (Also, I’m open to sponsorship/advertising opportunities with you)

Short people are just the same
As you and I,
(A fool such as I)
All men are brothers
Until the day they die
(It’s a wonderful world)

Randy Newman, I’m not letting you off the hook with that one nice stanza in the middle of the song. You still went back to your biased garbage for the rest of the song.

I looked up Randy’s height. He was 6’0″. He’s 80 now and I bet my short body could kick the crap out of him. But I wouldn’t because I don’t judge people like that. Also, if you want to see the list of average human height by country click THIS LINK. And if you’re less than 5’10” tall, give me a shout in the comments. I’m betting there’s more of us than there are them and if we band together we can take over the world and make them wear ill-fitting clothes.

Thanks for reading and if you like, you can send this to a short person you know so they can join my army. ~Phil

Florida The Fire Swamp, The Minister of Loneliness & Our President Might Be Sane

I‘m in Florida this week, so I thought this classic Phil Factor from 2017 would be apropos. Enjoy!

Florida is The Fire Swamp: Remember in The Princess Bride when Westley  and Princess Buttercup were trying to get away from Prince Humperdinck and they fled into The Fire Swamp? Florida is the living embodiment of The Fire Swamp. You can go to Florida and skip Disney. The state is it’s own theme park called Nature Is Trying To Kill Us. Don’t believe me? On a good day, everyone there still has to worry about sinkholes opening up and swallowing their house or car.

A few weeks ago when it got cold down here there were literally frozen iguanas dropping out of the trees. Just this week the problem is monkeys with herpes.

The Fire Swamp had the R.O.U.S.’s, aka the Rodents of Unusual Size. Florida has  I.O.U.S. Insects of Unusual Size. In my research for this Phil Factor I came across two news articles. One referenced a Florida infestation of “giant mosquitoes” called gallinippers that are “20 times the size of normal mosquitoes.” Their bite is described as “being stabbed or having a hot nail driven into your skin.” Delightful huh?

But it doesn’t end with mosquitoes. There are also giant, “rat-sized, tire puncturing” African snails invading Florida. That’s got to be all kinds of fun when you step out in your bare feet to pick up the morning paper.  And seriously remember the R.O.U.S.’s in the movie? Tell me those didn’t look and walk like alligators!

Remember when Westley was put in The Pit of Despair? Maybe he could have used a Minister of Loneliness. This week the British Prime Minister, Theresa May, appointed a Minister of Loneliness to help people in the country who “often or always feel lonely.”

Minister of Loneliness? That sounds like a Harry Potter villain doesn’t it. I’d like to suggest a few more official titles to help with other problems.

I imagine that the Minister of Loneliness is assisted by the Liege of Lugubriousness.

All Police Chiefs should be re-named Secretary of Scoundrels.

And what government would be complete without The Earl of Economy?

If we want our military to be feared we might want to change Secretary of Defense to The Duke of Destruction. With titles like these I imagine that more good people would have interest in government work.

Speaking of government officials…. Earlier this week it came out that during Donald Trump’s official annual physical he voluntarily took an extra cognitive test to prove his sanity. The White House physician wasn’t going to do the test because it’s not normally part of the physical exam, but Donald requested it and then aced it. I’m not sure if that’s more of a relief or a surprise. I’m glad though that he can correctly identify a lion, rhinoceros and a camel. That may come in handy when he visits Florida.

Have a great Saturday! ~Phil

My 2024 Psychic Predictions: Already Got One Right

Remember my 2024 psychic predictions from about two weeks ago when I said, “2024 will be the year of UFO’s: Everywhere across the world there will be more public and political acknowledgement that our world is regularly visited by beings from other worlds, leading to the discovery that Pete Davidson is an alien, but a nice one.”

I guess I can check that one off the list. I don’t know if Pete Davidson was there, but January 1st in Miami there was a huge police presence at a mall and they shut it down, evacuating everyone.

According to Forbes.com: “10ft Aliens/Creatures (caught on camera?) fired at inside and outside Miami Mall, media silent, cops are covering it up saying kids were fighting with fireworks, yet all these cop cars, & air traffic stopped that night except for black military choppers…and no media coverage,” one account on X claimed. (That’s the picture of the mall above)

Not a real picture of an alien shopping at the Miami mall.

I’m not saying I believe that aliens were at Cinnabon in Miami , but as I said, this year there will be more public discourse about aliens than we’ve heard since the Roswell incident.

(Thank you to AI for the above spot on pic)

It was probably a bunch of rowdy teenagers on a Friday night, and to be fair, teenagers might as well be aliens. But what if there’s a 1% chance it was real aliens? How much more interesting would our world suddenly be?

Have a great Saturday! ~Phil

The Top Ten 2024 Banished Phrases

Calm down free speech people! I’m on your side. No one is actually banning words or phrases, unless you live in Florida and Ron Dementis is your governor.

Have you ever thought to yourself, “I am so sick of hearing that phrase!”?  Sometimes it’s an acronym at work. Other times it’s a pop culture phenomenon. Often it’s a word or phrase that another generation says that makes no sense to you.

Lake Superior State University is located in Michigan’s upper peninsula, which should really be part of Wisconsin or Canada. Each year they publish a list of the top ten words that people would like to see banished.

That is exactly the kind of hard hitting research you’ll find at a “state school.” I should know, because I went to one. Harvard is busy curing cancer, but Lake Superior State University is spending public money making lists of silly phrases. They are definitely my kind of people.

I’ll give you their list with my ideas and I’d love to hear your thoughts and suggestions in the comments.

1. Hack: For me, this word being banished is well overdue. Haven’t we heard the phrase “life hack” constantly since they invented the internet?

2. Impact: As in the phrase “This tiny state school in Michigan is trying to make an impact with their ridiculous list.”

3. “At the end of the day…” Why is this phrase being banished now? This is something my parents generation used to say. Too little too late LSSU. At the end of the day, I’d rather not learn literary arts at Lake Superior State University.

4. Rizz, which is short for charisma. Apparently this word is all the rage with the kids these days. Although if you use the word rizz, you sound like the last person in the world with any actual rizz.

5. Slay, as in “The Phil Factor is slaying it lately!” That seems like a perfectly good use of the word because we all know that The Phil Factor has rizz.

6. Iconic: I completely agree. This is a label attached way too freely to people, events and arts that are most definitely not iconic.

7. Cringe-worthy: This is a phrase I’m actually in support of. I think it’s useful. If we take away cringe-worthy, what replaces it as a description for an act or situation that makes everyone present uncomfortable?

8. Obsessed: This word is definitely overused. It’s like people are obsessed with it. See what I did there?

9. Side hustle: Ugh. I agree. This is one of the lamest and most overused phrases of the last 15 years. It developed because of Ubering, but now gets attached to any second job. Is my blog my side hustle?

10. Wait for it… Definitely overused. and if you “wait for it” I’ll come up with an equally lame pun to hammer that point home. If you wait for it, Lake Superior State University will still never be relevant because of this list.

OK, here’s your turn. In the comments, what are the words and phrases you think should be banned? Also, if you want to contribute to Lake Superior State Universities 2025 list, you can go to: lssu.edu/banishedwords.

Happy New Year! I hope you enjoy your day off . Thanks for reading! ~Phil

The Phil Factor Top Ten of 2023

This is my New Years Eve on my blog. Is it arrogant to post my top ten ten viewed posts of 2023? Possibly, but if a whole bunch of other internet people like them, then maybe you will! All those people can’t be wrong, right? In the comments I’d love to hear which is your favorite!

10. The Riveting Plot of EVERY Hallmark Movie I think this one speaks for itself.

9. Throwback Thursday! The Rolling Stones are Liars: My 2013 High School Reunion. Apparently nostalgia is popular.

8. Who Are You? Who, who? I Really Wanna Know! If you like sentimental nostalgia, this is for you!

7. The Walled Lake Killer and The Shoe Tree: I find this one being on the list super interesting. I wrote this post in 2013 because there were some similar themes between my fictional novel, The Sneaker Tree (available on Amazon) and some tragic goings on in Oakland County, Michigan. Why in the world is this ten year old post still garnering hundreds of views? Click the title link to find out.

6. My True Psychic Predictions for 2024: When I posted this column about a week ago some guy on Facebook tried to pick a fight by saying that using the word true and psychic together was an oxymoron. I politely explained his incorrectness and did not receive a reply. Read the predictions to find out why he was so pissed!

When the weather turns cold I’m getting this sweatshirt

5. Top Ten Signs Your Parents Are Swingers: This post from last February still gets a steady stream of views. Apparently a lot of people are worried about what their parents are doing.

4. Interview with Demonologist Rich Valdes: I’m surprised that this didn’t rank higher this year. If you haven’t read it, you should. This guys a legit exorcist and was featured on a TV series last Spring. This is one of my coolest interviews ever. Consequently, I have a demonologist phone number if I need it!

3. Welcome To The Future: My Psychic Predictions for 2023: I’ll fess up. Out of five predictions, only two came true. Hey, there’s a lot going on in the big world. Sometimes things change. Feel free to read this and enjoy the funny stuff.

2. The Top Ten Amish Sex Positions: If that’s not the best clickbait title ever, I don’t know what is. This post has received thousands of views from random google searches since 2018. Go on, click it. You know you want to.

1. The Top Ten Psychic Pick-Up Lines: I have no idea why, but since 2017 this has always ranked in my annual Top Ten. Apparently there’s a lot of desperate psychics out there trying to get better with the opposite sex.

That’s the list. I hope you found something fun that you missed earlier this year. Thank you for all your reads and comments during 2023 and I look forward to chatting with you in 2024! ~Phil

Santos is Out! Is Phil in?

Look at those two! Which one are you going to trust? Fortunately you don’t have to worry about trusting former Congressman George Santos. How about that guy on the right. He looks pretty trustworthy. He could be a member of Congress right?

I was way ahead of Congress when it comes to wanting to kick George Santos out of our government. If you didn’t READ THIS last January, go ahead. It’s pretty good.

George Santos was voted out of congress by his peers. Thank goodness that coworkers at our jobs can’t vote us out, right?

In the past I have joked about becoming President (but was I really joking?). Now there is a Congressional opening in my state. I don’t live in George’s district, but why the heck not put me in there anyway? It’s Long Island for cripes sake! There really are not a lot of worthy candidates in that area of the state.

Those four pictures are how Long Islanders have been represented in the media over the past 30 years. Do we really want anyone of that ilk as part of our government? We all know the answer to that. So why can’t the answer be me?

Sure, I don’t live on Long Island, but if that’s required, then I’ll just rent an AirBNB there and run for Congress. I’m pretty sure I’d be an upgrade over George Santos. Then again, so would most of our house pets.

Have a great rest of your Friday and vote for Phil!

Thanks for reading! ~Phil (future congressman)

Ten Weird Holiday Traditions from Around The World

My first baby picture! (pic credit to https://www.artstation.com/yoneyu )

Not everybody celebrates the holidays just like you do. One of the ten traditions in the list is made up by me. See if you can guess which one is the fake and put your guess in the comments.

Ten Weird Holiday Traditions From Around the World

10. South Africa: In South Africa deep fried caterpillars are the traditional holiday meal. Who knows why? Maybe they believe that eating caterpillars symbolically will make their life turn into a butterfly or some such nonsense. Or maybe caterpillars are just really tasty. Who are we kidding? Anything deep fried IS really tasty.

sundried-emperor-moth-caterpillars-photo-credit-gizmag

9. Norway: Maybe my blogging friend Maja Asgautsen from Norway can tell me if this is accurate. According to what I read in the internet, in Norway it’s traditional not to do any cleaning on Christmas Eve and all brooms are put away. Sounds like Norwegian Christmas Eve happens at my house several days every week.

8. Caracas, Venezuela: Residents of this one town, Caracas, go to Christmas Eve mass on roller skates.

this-one-caracas

7. Germany: In Germany they hide a pickle in the Christmas tree and the first child to find it gets a small gift. I would bet that in German bars around the holidays  “Hey gorgeous, how would you like to play hide the pickle?” is an overused, and probably unsuccessful pick up line.

6. Ukraine: In the Ukraine, instead of tinsel and lights they decorate their Christmas trees with fake spider webs and spiders. Apparently they watch The Nightmare Before Christmas  a little too often.

5. China: In China families bring their pets, dogs, cats, and birds to a special mass on Christmas Eve to have them blessed. In Chinese culture it is believed that animals are more susceptible to demonic possession and the ceremony is thought to “cleanse” them for the coming year.  That is why most households have a “lucky cat” statue to ward off evil spirits.

4. Estonia: Families go to the sauna together. I’m cool with going to the sauna, but with my family? Ugh.

3. Great Britain: Tradition dictates that each member of the family must stir the Christmas pudding in a clockwise direction and make a wish. Reportedly 90% of wishes are “I wish is wasn’t cold and rainy.”

funny-picture-weather-in-england

2. Guatemala: They sweep out their houses on Christmas Eve, with brooms they borrowed from the Norwegians, creating a pile of dirt in front of their home. Then they burn an effigy of the devil on top. Geez, Guatemala, lighten up, it’s Christmas! It’s supposed to be fun.

1. Greece: In a twisted version of Elf on the Shelf, the Greeks tell their children that the Kallikantzaroi, a race of evil goblins that live underground, come to the surface to wreak havoc during the twelve days of Christmas. Nice, parenting by terror. What’s more traditional than that?

Well, one of those ten is a completely fake. Which one do you think it is? Have a great Tuesday! ~Phil

Ten Reasons To Hate The Holidays!

You’re a mean one Mister Grinch. You really are a heel. You’re as cuddly as a cactus, you’re as charming as an eel, Mister Grinch. You’re a bad banana with a greasy black peel.

Yup, that’s me; King of sarcasm and hater of all things jolly. I’m not saying that there aren’t things to love about the holidays. There are plenty, but c’mon everybody, if we’re truly being honest with ourselves, there are a lot of things to hate about the holidays. Here’s my top ten, and in the spirit of a gift that keeps on giving, I’m hoping I’ll mention one or two things you haven’t noticed before and from this day forward you won’t be able to not notice them.

10. Candy canes: They’re sticky. That’s pretty much it. I like the minty flavor, but I can get that in a York Peppermint Patty without my lips, tongue and hands covered in a gross, viscous substance. And they make too many! Has anyone ever eaten all the candy canes they purchase each year? There must be landfills just overflowing with candy canes. If we could make fossil fuel out of leftover candy canes the world would be a better place.

9. The Nog Shortage: All holiday season everything is nog this and nog that. It’s hard to find a beverage that doesn’t offer a nog flavored option. (kind of like the Fall pumpkin spice influx) But, if you like nog you’re screwed about 8 weeks later. Apparently nog is such a rare and valuable commodity that it can only be offered for a limited time. I’m going to get rich by drilling a nog well in my backyard and then selling my nog at outrageous prices. I will also have a Nog Blog.

06-bubblegum

8.  Holiday movies set in southern California: I hate them because the people in them always look so happy to go outside and hang lights on their palm trees. Jerks. They’re just flaunting their warm weather and lack of snow. If you want a holiday movie to make me happy, how about one where a bunch of So-Cal people are stranded in an avalanche in the Himalayas and they have to eat each other to survive.

7. More traffic: This one’s pretty obvious, but for cripes sake you idiots! Haven’t you heard of the internet? I don’t care how much I love someone, nobody is worth going to the mall for from now until mid-January.

6. Lazy Hollywood folks: All our regular shows go on hiatus and show re-runs for 8 weeks. Seriously? You people make billions off these shows and you only make 10 to 20 episodes a year? That’s only five and a half months of work! When I’m elected President, or Sexiest Man Alive, whichever comes first, I’m going to pass a law stating that every television program is required to produce a holiday special and one other original episode during the months of December and January.

Trust me, I’m not going to Louis Vuitton ever

5.  Lines in every store ALL the time: Yes, this one’s pretty obvious. It’s just a good thing no one sells handguns as an impulse buy item at the checkouts. Then again, I don’t live in the south, they probably do there.

4. Frozen: I don’t even have a young Disney Princess obsessed daughter and I’m sick and tired of this stupid movie. I’m sick of the songs and the pictures everywhere. I’ve never seen it and I don’t know what it’s about, but enough already! It’s just another Disney movie where the parents are dead right? I challenge Disney to make some movies where they don’t kill parents as a cheap emotional hook at the beginning.

Funniest_Memes_this-food-is-so-frozen_7263

3.  Commercials: I’ve never walked out to my driveway or garage to find a car with a bow on it. I’ve seen some version of this commercial since I was a kid, completely setting me up with unrealistic expectations.  Look, Bill Gates, I know you and your wife donate millions to charitable causes, just once could you skip a few mosquito nets and vaccines and have a Lexus delivered to my driveway?

2. Religious differences: It’s hard to believe, but not every religion has their most important, most exciting holiday in December. When I’m elected President, or Sexiest Man Alive, whichever comes first, I’m passing a law stating that all religions have to have their biggest holiday at the same time so we can easily sort out the school schedules, sales, and work vacations, Makes sense doesn’t it? And just to show that I’m not Christianity-centric, let’s do it in July in the northern hemisphere and December in the southern hemisphere. That way no one has to deal with snow when traveling to see the relatives in the snow, unless you’re stupid enough to live where there’s always snow.

1. Santa Claus: And you thought they’re milking the Batman and Spider-Man characters for all their worth? St. Nick hasn’t changed in centuries! Jeez, get that guy a cape and some superpowers. How awesome would that be if he had a nemesis that was out trying to stop him from delivering presents. God has the devil, Batman has the Joker, why can’t Santa have a nemesis?

Please put your holiday pet peeves in the comments. As always, if you enjoyed #ThePhilFactor don’t be a Grinch and share it by hitting the Facebook button below. Have a great Sunday! ~Phil

1. Friends, The One with All the Thanksgivings, Season 5, Episode 8

This episode of course has Monica with the turkey on her head, but it’s also got a bunch of fun flashbacks from the gangs Thanksgivings as well as their distant past. Find it on Netflix.

That’s my Top Ten. If you’ve got some favorite Thanksgiving episodes from other shows, please put them in the comments ! I hope you’re having a great weekend! ~Phil
