I Vie, You Vie, We All Vie for Wi-Fi !

yaelah.co

yaelah.co

That’s the dream isn’t it? Free wi-fi 24/7, everywhere we go! The idea for this post came from a thought of mine last week. Yup, I had one. Hard to believe, I know, but sometimes I do. I thought to myself, what would I sacrifice to have free, 24/7 wi-fi everywhere I go? Has anyone else had this thought?

I thought that I could give up the pinky toe on my left foot for free lifetime wi-fi. I briefly thought I might let doctors implant a tiny wi-fi router somewhere in my body. I ruled that out though because I was worried about possible cancer from the constant signal coursing through my organs. Then I reconsidered because I remembered that  I’ve eaten fruit covered in pesticides and Chicken McNuggets made from chicken and asbestos my whole life and I don’t have cancer yet, (Two things: 1. if there is a God, please don’t smite me, it was a joke, and 2. If my blog is popular enough that McDonald’s sues me for the asbestos Chicken McNuggets line, I will be so proud)

2-funny-wifi-password-pictures-quotes

Then I thought (yes, two times in a week!) that the premise of a great reality/game show would be a series of escalating mental and physical challenges like the old show Fear Factor (which gave me the idea for the name of this blog ten years ago)  until the final, victorious contestant, who is willing to go farther than the others, finally wins free 24/7 wi-fi for life.

So anyway, back to my left pinky toe. The more I think about it, the more I think I could give it up for free wi-fi. Here are the reasons that came into my head: 1) I’m right footed, so I probably wouldn’t miss the left pinky toe. 2) I wear socks and or shoes about 90% of the time, so nobody would even notice. 3) You know how bad it is when you accidentally stub your pinky toe hard on the corner of something?  I’d reduce the chance of that by 50%. 4) If someone did notice it was missing, once it’s all healed over, how repulsive would it really look?

men-bluetooth-women-wifi

I did consider if I’d give up a pinky finger for free wi-fi, but ruled that out pretty quickly because in my spare time I’m a classical concert pianist. No, I’m not, but I still could be if I have all my digits. It’s funny isn’t it? Fifteen years ago we didn’t have wi-fi and now I’m debating if I’d give up body parts for it. I would bet I’m not the only one either. That’s why the cell phone carriers are so evil. They know we want our data and they charge us crazy amounts, and we pay it.

When I’m elected President, or Sexiest Man Alive, whichever comes first, I am going to put Stephen Hawking and Neil deGrasse Tyson to work on developing a worldwide wi-fi system. It won’t be free, but it will be worked into your taxes for a fraction of the cost of the wi-fi or data signal you pay for through cell phone carriers. It would just become another public utility that everyone has a right to.  (Also, how did the Canadians know to name that high school drama TV show after Neil deGrasse Tyson before he was even famous?)  And did you know that Stephen Hawking is British? I don’t hear that in his accent at all. Go ahead click the links, those really are their websites)

Dude-My-Wifi-is-Leaking

So I guess there’s two ways I’ll get my 24/7 free worldwide wi-fi. I either have to become President or find someone to offer it to me in exchange for my left pinky toe. What would free wi-fi everywhere be worth to you?

As always, have a great Saturday and if you enjoyed #ThePhilFactor please share it by wi-fi by hitting the Facebook, Twitter, or reblog button below.

TBT: Fake Your Own Life

(04/05/2014) If you are reading this I may already be dead. That’s an attention grabber eh? You know how some people fake their own death to get out of debts, marriages, or legal situations? I plan to fake my own life. Heck, most people are already faking their own life on social media, so why not take advantage of the modern technology?

facebookgrave

The miracle that is social media will let me live on forever whether I actually do or not. Here’s my plan: Because Facebook let’s you write, save and schedule statuses to post to your page, I’ve already scheduled thousands of Facebook posts, Happy Birthdays and all, to cover many, many years. Don’t worry, I’ve also photographed a lot of meals and selfies that will appear on Instagram until I’m at least a hundred years old. Through Hootsuite I’ve scheduled tweets for my Twitter account. Trust me, you’ll want to follow me. They’re hilarious. On WordPress I’ve written hundreds of blog posts that are scheduled to be released for years to come. The Phil Factor will never die.

In the event that I outlive you I’d like all of you to take these steps now as well. Death is sad and I really don’t want to tolerate unpleasant feelings of loss. I think that if everyone did this the world would be a happier place.

As always, if you enjoyed #ThePhilFactor please share by Facebook, Twitter or re-blogging. You’d better at least hit like because if I’m already dead my ghost may come to haunt you.  Have a great weekend! ~Phil

The Anti-Social Network: Let’s Fix Facebook, If Only For a Day

This is sort of my Throwback Thursday post, but I’ve decided to make this an annual thing. Two years ago I started the Facebook National No Re-Post Day and, in spite of my much smaller number of readers at the time, the idea caught on and was shared across the interwebs. Like the Groundhog, it’s time for it’s annual appearance. Read the rest and share.

Facebook

Just last weekend I noticed it. I looked at my Facebook page and I thought, Facebook is broken. This isn’t the Facebook I signed up for. When I joined Facebook I wanted to talk to people. I wanted to share with family and friends. I wanted to know how many kids you have and if they made honor roll.  Is junior in the school play or did Susie make the soccer team. I wanted to see your vacation pictures. I wanted to know what everyone else is doing this weekend or if you saw that movie and liked it.

What I did learn when I looked at my Facebook last week was that Alan likes Tough Mudder. I also found out from Joni’s  your-ecard  that sometimes she takes baths because it’s harder to drink wine in the shower. I also learned from Facebook that there are a lot of kooky pictures in favor of gun ownership. I discovered that Larry is really good at Candy Crush.  Apparently Samantha has a gambling problem because she goes to the Facebook casino almost every day.  I also had no idea Michael was a farmer that needed me to buy him a pig. Apparently George Takei has a lot more friends than I do. Whether I wanted to know or not, I now know that three of my friends like Dick’s…. Sporting Goods.  Occasionally you may even see stuff about a friend being an indie author and posting the link to his blog all the time.

Facebook used to be the social network. We would actually post things about our lives and comment on or ask questions about the pictures and stories our friends and family posted. Now when I visit Facebook all I seem to see is an endless string of  re-posts and advertisements my friends have signed up for.  I’m as guilty as anyone. Some days I want to join in the Facebook fun but I don’t have anything new going on in my life so I’ll gladly borrow a bit of brilliance from Sulu or an e-card and re-post it on my wall hoping to get a laugh or a like.

In my title I suggested that we fix Facebook, if only for a day. My idea is the Facebook National No Re-Post Day on Facebook. It will be a day when we as the citizens of Facebook get back to our roots. Let’s take one day, on a weekend, when we do most of our online communicating, and spend the day not re-posting or liking ads but sharing on Facebook. Let’s post pictures of ourselves and our kids. Let’s talk about memories of high school. Let’s tell everyone where we’re going on vacation. Maybe we could even share our mood using words instead of a emoticons.  This year the date is this Saturday March 21st as Facebook National No Re-Post Day.

Irony of all ironies though, if we’re going to make this work we’re going to have to re-post this a lot. Enough to get a viral thing going in two days. I will personally take responsibility to post this to George Takei, because if he’s on board it’s a done deal.  I need all of you to do the rest. Below this hit the Facebook Share button and encourage your friends. If you’re on WordPress hit the re-blog button. If you’re on Twitter please re-tweet. Follow me on Facebook or follow my blog for reminders for the big day. You could even start a Facebook event and invite all your friends as I did the  last two years. With a few clicks we can all take back Facebook this Saturday March 21st.  (Yeah, I’m completely serious. Let’s do this)

Hey Facebook! I’ll Feel Fat If I Want To

images (24)

According to USA Today “Facebook is replacing its “feeling fat” emoji with “feeling stuffed” after thousands of people signed an online petition to protest that it promoted online body shaming.”

Apparently now Facebook is telling us how we can and cannot feel. If I want to feel fat I’m going to feel fat. And if I want to tell all my friends that I feel fat, I will. I don’t need Facebook or a bunch of self-righteous jerks with an online petition telling me that my feelings might hurt someone else’s feelings. Zuckerberg you moron. Are you going to change Facebook every time “thousands” of people sign an online petition? I could start an online petition saying Facebook is stupid and thousands of people would sign it. I could start an online petition advocating any number of stupid ideas and thousands of people would sign it. Hey Mark Zuckerberg, guess what! I think the “feeling sad” emoji is shaming people with depression. You’d better remove that right away before someone gets offended.

thumb-down-emoticon

From USA Today, “Catherine Weingarten of the group Endangered Bodies started the Change.org petition last month.” “When Facebook users set their status to ‘feeling fat,’ they are making fun of people who consider themselves to be overweight, which can include many people with eating disorders,” Weingarten, a graduate student at Ohio State University, told ABC News.”

So Catherine Weingarten, a graduate student who is probably no more than 24 years old, thinks she knows what’s best for everyone. Yeah, thanks Cathy. Not that I use emojis anyway because I’m an actual grown up who uses words to express my feelings, but I am not taking life advice from someone who just three years ago was probably worrying about whether she could find a hair clip that matched her sorority sweatshirt. Guess what Cathy Weingarten? When I eat a big meal and I feel fat and I tell my Facebook friends, I am not making fun of you or anyone else. My feelings about my body are mine, not yours or anyone else’s. If you feel bad about yourself because I expressed my feeling online using a tiny cartoon face that’s a you problem, not a me problem. In fact, I encourage everyone reading this to click on the link to the petition and read it. As you read, notice how many times Ms. Weingarten says the words me, myself, or I. If you don’t want to read it, I’ll give you a hint, it’s a lot. The online petition is all about her feelings.

Cathy Weingarten, you and everyone who signed that petition are immature, online keyboard bullies. Because a small fraction of Facebook users didn’t like something you wanted to change how everyone else in the world expressed their feelings. I hope you feel good about eradicating an emoji, but guess what? If it’s not another emoji today, it will be a billboard tomorrow or a song on the radio next week that offends. Start all the petitions you want, but nobody is going to bubble wrap the world to make it perfectly safe for you. That’s a you problem.

And Cathy, you are also an exclusionary jerk. Your petition specifically asks Facebook to “stop encouraging negative body image among girls.” Just girls? Why not guys? Don’t overweight guys have feelings too? By specifically saying “girls” you’re excluding half of the overweight population.  I’m offended by that. I think I’ll start a petition.

Whatever happened to freedom of speech? It’s not that I don’t care about other people’s feelings, I do.. I don’t think that hate language towards anyone is ever acceptable, but expressing my feelings about me is not hate language. I don’t think I need anyone else legislating what I say about how I feel about myself. That becomes a slippery slope towards censorship. Everyone who has read this far, please consider this as my online petition for sanity in social media. If you wanted to share this on Facebook by hitting the Facebook share button below I wouldn’t start a petition to stop you. In fact, go ahead and share this to the point that it gets back to Catherine Weingarten and Mark Zuckerberg.

Top Ten Tuesday! The Ten Funniest Tweets I Read Last Week

tweet

Sadly, none of these were written by me. I love my Twitter though. If I was still doing stand-up I’d be stealing from Twitter all the time. In no particular order of funniness, here are ten tweets that made me laugh this week.

@Quartzjixler: Fifty Shades of Grey? See it all the time. – dogs

@AnAbsurdBird: I only go to the gym this time of day cos *all the pensioners in make me look like a badass, *some of, *OK! Just that guy with the dodgy hip.

@SamGrittner: POLICE OFFICER: “Do you know why I pulled you over?”

ME: “Because you know I love riddles.”

Yoda_Empire_Strikes_Back

@Sasshole: I’d like to say I have a yoga body, but it’s really more of a Yoda body. Resist all the cheese, I can’t.

Hottubtimemachinecover

@HeyZeus666: *starts hot tub time machine*

*goes back 3 hours in time*

*saves fifteen bucks by not going to see Hot Tub Time Machine*

@SardonicTart: If God is real, then explain why the weekend is only two days

@Ryncasaurus: Woman: what colour are my eyes?

Man: white

W: what? White??

M: oh. Sorry. That’s the only part we see when you’re always rolling                                 them at us.

the-grinchs-heart

@biclops72: The Grinch’s prostate was also 3 sizes too big

@CatherineLMK: Oh, so if a baby takes 3 steps and falls over, everyone goes nuts. But if I do it I’m “an embarrassment” and “ruining your son’s birthday”?

Like I said, I love my Twitter, but not everyone “gets” Twitter. If you aren’t a tweeter but would like to understand it a little better, read my post from last fall,  A Guide to Twitter for the Non-Twits.  If you are on Twitter and I’m not following you yet, follow me @ThePhilFactor and I’ll follow you back. Have a great Tuesday! ~Phil

Top Ten Tuesday! The Top Ten Most Ridiculous Dating Sites

If my wife checks my search history without knowing I wrote this, she is going to be very upset. These are all real, except one. Try to be the first person in the comments to guess which one.

10. GlutenFreeSingles.com: Fifteen years ago no one on the planet knew what gluten was. I’m tempted to go to one of their live dating events and spike the punch with gluten.

9. ClownDating.com: To which all the ladies reading this reply, “They’re all clowns.”

psycho_clown

8. StachePassions.com: A site for men with facial hair and the ladies who love it. At least I hope it’s not a site where men find women with mustaches.

7. MagicMatch.com: A dating site for grown up lovers of the Harry Potter books and movies. It would have to be magic for any of these nerds to find a date any other way.

6. SeaCaptainDate.com: The tag line is: “Find your first mate!” I’m pretty sure it might as well say Find your first date. Ladies if you date a “sea captain” keep in mind that if he decides to kill you he has a whole ocean in which to dispose of your body.

5. ZombiePassions.com: “A 100% free online dating & social networking site for zombies, zombie lovers & people who have been working in a dead-end job for too long.” Look, I like zombies as much as the next guy, but I don’t want my girlfriend to look like one.

dating22-600x400

4. CanDoBetter.com: This site is both pure genius and pure evil. You submit photos of yourself and your significant other. Users of the site vote. Whoever is deemed to be able to do better than their current lover gets admitted to the site to find someone better. How horrible would it be to go on there and find a picture of your significant other already there?

3. DiaperMates.com: The site where people who like to pretend they’re giant babies go to find other like minded individuals. Don’t click the link. Trust me on this. I’m not kidding.

2. FurryMate.com: If you like to dress up like a cartoon animal and get jiggy with it, this is the site for you. I wonder if fur balls are ever a problem?

furrydating2500likes1

1. Amish-Online-Dating.com: Apparently everyone on this site is a fraud. You can’t be Amish and use the internet! If I was going to sign up for a dating site this would be it though.

This post may be humorous for some and helpful for others. Did you guess which was the fake dating site?

A POLL! Just answer one question…

podcast(2)

To cast or not to cast, that is the question! An author, Robert Chazz Chute, whom I interviewed once is a huge fan of podcasts as a medium to promote oneself as an author. Yesterday I came across the Marc Maron Show on Netflix and it’s based on a comedian and his podcast. (if you’re interested, check out his show. It’s odd and quirky but funny.) Clearly, podcasts are a “thing.” But is it a thing I should do? Or, should I do a Vlog? A video blog? Would my blog be more appealing if my Saturday Phil Factor was me ranting in front of the camera?  I’m looking for opinions. Please take the poll and if you have a few seconds offer your opinions in the comments about why you voted how you did.

Thanks for your opinions everybody! Have a great Sunday! ~Phil

A Guide to Twitter for the Non-Twits

“I don’t get Twitter.” I hear it all the time. I understand though because when I first signed up for Twitter I didn’t “get it” either. Twitter just looked like a stream of consciousness non-sequiturs and random nonsense.

The truth is, a lot of what you find on Twitter is nonsense, but it doesn’t have to be. You can tailor Twitter to be what you want it to be. One of my first experiences with Twitter that showed me that it wasn’t just idiotic, unintelligible banter, was when I was on Twitter during the 2012 Super Bowl. It was like I had walked into a sports bar and everyone was in on the same conversation. They talked about plays as they happened and critiqued the commercials during every break in the action. I even joined in a little and got responses to some of my comments.

My second experience that showed me that Twitter was more than just meaningless fun was when I got my first Twitter notification that someone mentioned me. An author and HuffPo columnist, @GregoryGAllen,  had come across one of my blog posts that was shared by a friend and he bought one of my books and tweeted that he was reading it. I was amazed. I had never had Twitter do anything to me before. I thought it was just something amusing to read. Gregory and I started a conversation on Twitter and eventually interviewed each other for our respective blogs.

Another time I was dissatisfied with flight delays and I tweeted the airline about it and I ended up with a $150 certificate good towards my next flight on that airline.

Get a Good Username

So how do you start on Twitter? First sign up for an account, but put some thought into your username. You could use your real name, but chances are that it’s already taken and you’ll be stuck adding underlines or symbols or random numbers to make it unique. Instead, try using an old nickname or a funny play on words with your name. It will be easy for you to remember.

Don’t be an egg!

twitteregg

An egg is what your profile picture will be if you don’t upload a picture. You might be saying to yourself, “But Phil,” which is an odd thing to say to yourself, “if I put a real picture of me won’t some crazy stalker come after me?” Relax. Put a picture of yourself, just not your home address. If you leave it as an egg no one will follow or interact with you. If you don’t want to put a picture of yourself, go with your favorite cartoon character or pet.

In your brief bio put what you’re interested in whether it be hobbies or favorite TV shows or authors. Relate it to what you want to do on Twitter. If you do, people that share your interests will be more likely to follow you and if you follow them you may see Tweets related to your interests.

How To Find People to Follow and How To Get Followers

On your Twitter page look up at the top right. There you’ll find an oval search box that says “Search Twitter.” Put in a hashtag # followed by your favorite topic, such as #bad80smovies. Guess what? You’ll immediately have a page full of Tweets about your topic. You can then click on and follow people that tweet about what you’re interested in. And guess what? Many of them will follow you back! Or if you want to see what your favorite celeb is talking about, look them up and follow them. Make sure it has a blue check mark symbol on the account so you know it’s the real person. The famous folks may occasionally respond to one of your responses to their tweet, but they probably won’t follow you back.

What to Tweet and How To Interact with Others Tweets

Remember, social media is forever. Just because you can say something behind the cloak of a username doesn’t mean that you should. There’s always a way to trace things back to a real person. That being said, people say things on Twitter that they’d never say on Facebook. You can make jokes, mock celebrities and complain about your family. To just get your toes wet maybe tweet about a great book you just read or a movie you saw. End your tweet with the #subject. Others looking for that topic may find your tweet and reply or start a conversation.

If you see a tweet you like, hate or want to comment on look at the symbols beneath the words. If you click on the arrow you can reply directly to the person who posted the tweet. Remember though, even if your response is directed at the one person, everyone can see it. If you really like a tweet you have two choices; you can click the star to indicate you like it, or if you want to share that tweet with others who follow you click on the kind of circular arrows. Doing that will post the tweet to your timeline but still credit the original author. Retweeting is the best way to make friends on twitter. We all have egos and like to know that others like our opinions or jokes.

1366515006851512109free-green-button-retweet-md

I’m not trying to give the impression that I’m the King of Twitter. I’m not. Hell, I’m not even the court jester of Twitter. I’m just trying to help out those that want to try it but feel overwhelmed the first time they look at the Twitter timeline and don’t know what to make of it. Twitter is like getting in a pool. If you just stick your toe in you’ll never learn how to swim. You’ve got to just jump into Twitter and flail around until you learn how to swim, or fly I guess since Twitters logo is a bird.

Feel free to follow me on Twitter and say hello. The follow button is up there in the left sidebar. I’ll follow you back. If you like what you read at #ThePhilFactor please share by hitting the Twitter, Facebook, or reblog buttons below. Have a great weekend! ~Phil

Kim Kardashian’s Butt and Vacation Boobs

This is it. Mano a mano. Kim Kardashian versus #ThePhilFactor. Or rather it’s Kim Kardashian’s big bulbous butt versus my big bulbous sense of humor. Kim thought her racy pictures in PaperMag would #BreakTheInternet but she was sadly mistaken. If anybody breaks the internet it’s going to be me. Kim wanted to break it with her butt, but I’m going to break it by being an ass.

a2dee7debf51f3640

Yeah, Kim and I used to be an item way back when we were young. I was actually the first rung on her celebrity ladder. The fame and popularity of my books and The Phil Factor drew her to me. I should have known it wouldn’t last. The picture above is of us at a New Jersey Nets game. I thought she seemed just a little too eager to visit the locker room after the game. I should have known better.

Kim’s latest stunt, trying to “break the internet” by allowing the website for a little known magazine to post nude shots of her wasn’t even her or their idea. Check out this picture of myself I posted on The Phil Factor back in 2005 when Kim and I were dating.

PTKK

Look familiar? I’m pretty sure she photoshopped her head into this picture and gave it to that magazine. I’ve never shown my backside on The Phil Factor, but I’ve got glutes women would kill for. No one has yet but I’m keeping my fingers crossed.

Speaking of women killing for a great butt, I saw another item on the interwebs this week that caught my attention. What if you want the perfect body for lounging on the beach during your vacation but you don’t have the time to work out? Apparently there is now an answer to that. You can get “vacation boobs.”  As a guy, I love the sound of that. What it really means though is that a New York city cosmetic surgeon has developed a process where he injects saline solution directly into the breasts to inflate them for anywhere from 24 hours to two weeks. The bodily gradually absorbs the saline and the boobs shrink back to their normal size. Apparently they’re also developing a process for butts and men’s calves and pecs. Seriously ladies, when you go to the beach have you ever checked out a guys calves? I’m not even sure I have calves. I’ve never looked. And if you are single and you invest in vacation boobs or pecs and you meet someone on vacation, how do you explain the change in your body later?

Also, in another demonstration of idiocy on the world wide web this week, Katy Perry’s boyfriend DJ Diplo (it should be Dipshit if you ask me) caused waves when he tweeted that “somebody should start a Kickstarter to get Taylor Swift a booty.” Dude, what is your problem? What has Taylor Swift ever done to you? How about you worry about your own girlfriend’s booty? If I’m Katy Perry I’m kicking this guy to the curb for paying attention to Taylor Swift’s booty. If Taylor Swift is worried about this she could invest in a vacation booty. Somehow though I doubt that Taylor Swift and her billions of dollars are worrying about a tweet by that loser. Katy, you could do so much better.

I could not believe how much stupidity populated the internet this week. I’m not a celeb follower but all this stupid “news” was unavoidable. But alas the internet did not break. So why don’t we break the internet? You and me. If everyone who reads this shares it by hitting the Facebook, Twitter and re-blog buttons below it will spread far and wide until it is the only thing on the internet. I posted this at 6:40 this morning. If you’re reading it, the internet isn’t broken yet. Get clicking! C’mon, help #The Phil Factor #BreakTheInternet.

Have a great weekend! ~Phil

Twitter People vs. Facebook People

Yes, this is my Throwback Thursday post. When I posted this a year ago I thought it was a good post, but I had no idea the interest it would draw. Over 17,000 views in one day. I hope it’s as well received this time.

FBvsTw

Since 2004 Facebook is the brand name associated with social media. Twitter has been something of a much maligned younger sibling in the social media world since it stumbled home drunk two years later.  That is the difference between Facebook people and Twitter people.

On Facebook everyone is a polished, Cosby Show/Brady Bunch version of themselves. On Twitter everyone seems to be the sarcastic, hungover,  Jackass version of themselves.

There’s a chance Mark Zuckerberg will sue me for using the word Facebook 800 times in this blog post. Twitter will buy me a shot and retweet the link to this 800 times.

If Facebook and Twitter were movies, Facebook would be The Little Mermaid and Twitter would be The Rocky Horror Picture Show.

On Facebook you can follow all manner of celebrity but you’re still held back by a velvet rope. It’s a one way street of communication. On Twitter, if @AmandaBynes says she just set a fire in her driveway I can suggest she throw water on it and she might even thank me.

Twitter-vs-Facebook1

@shaylamaddox: Twitter makes me like people I’ve never met and Facebook makes me hate people I know in real life

On Facebook if George Takei posts a hilarious picture of Spock and Captain Kirk engaged in relations I can’t ask George where he got it or if William Shatner would mind if I posted it. Doing research for this I used Twitter to contact the artist, Kiersten Essenpreis,  of the cartoon above and the person Shayla Maddox, another artist, who actually tweeted the caption inspiring the cartoon. That’s Twitter, where everyone gets down in the mud and wrestles with everyone else. Click their names to check out Shayla and Kiersten’s websites. They’re both very talented artists.

On Facebook I post pictures of all my festive holiday ties. On Twitter I wear a t-shirt with the sleeves cut off to show off my tattoo.

Typical Facebook status by me: Only 8 hours until I’m on vacation!

Typical Tweet by @FunkyFresh_79: I just saw a pancake in a tutu outside of IHOP and I’m not sure if aroused is a strong enough word for what I’m feeling right now.

Don’t get me wrong. like a parent with two kids, I love both Twitter and Facebook equally, but in different ways. On Facebook you find old friends and on Twitter you make new friends. Facebook is a class reunion while Twitter is the first day, or maybe night, staying in a college dorm. You have to be invited to the Facebook party while on Twitter, party crashing is encouraged.

SquirrelArmy Tornado @Mikecanrant: Stuffing a bag of live chickens in the microwave for 3 minutes does NOT make popcorn chicken. In fact, it makes a mess. A horrible mess.

Before you get the wrong impression about my thoughts on Twitter and Facebook, let me tell you how I got sucked in. A year and a half ago I set up a Twitter account but rarely used it. Then I tuned into Twitter during the Super Bowl and it was like a great big conversation about the game; like you’d have in a bar talking with friendly strangers.  A few months after that I was on a business trip to Florida when suddenly I felt a little buzz in my pocket. A Twitter notification? I had never gotten one before! I only had 34 followers at the time. @GregoryGAllen, an author and HuffPo columnist whom I had never heard of, was tweeting out to his over 3,000 followers that he was reading my novel White Picket Prisons. I was stunned and amazed. I had no idea how he found me. I messaged him to ask and it turns out that a blog post of mine had gained some viral traction and had been shared by one of his Facebook friends. In that instance, without any crude jokes, Twitter and Facebook came together to make something amazing happen.

This is a perfect example of Twitter:

Chris Sherk @TheIronSherk: All of my life has led to this moment, trying to write the perfect Meatloaf tweet Once I do, everything else will be gravy.

That’s Twitter for you. Not everyone will get the joke, but the right people will.
